Robert Kubica maakte in de slotfase van het seizoen de grootste sprong van allen. Bij de vorige tussenstand na GP van Rusland nam hij nog een bescheiden 17e plek in. Met kostbare crashes in Japan (870.000 euro) en Brazilië (900.000 euro ) is de Pool geklommen naar plek vier. De top-3 bleef onveranderd. Sterker nog, Alexander Albon bouwde zijn ‘voorsprong’ op de foutloze Pierre Gasly. De Britse Thai verslikte zich in Mexico in VT2 (510.000 euro) en dat tijdens de VT1 in Brazilië in de regen nog een dunnetjes over: 600.000 euro. Lees ook: Gasly baalt van crash met Stroll: ‘We maakten kans op een goed resultaat’ Ook opvallend, nummer 2 Pierre Gasly is sinds zijn degradatie naar Toro Rosso foutloos, alleen in Abu Dhabi verloor hij nog buiten zijn schuld om een voorvleugel. Nummer 3 Kevin Magnussen deed ook weinig fout, wel kwam er door zijn knullige fout in Japan nog een flinke post bij: 690.000 euro. Ook Lando Norris krijgt een honourable mention voor zijn foutloze tweede helft en eindigde zijn rookie-jaar als 17e. Zijn teamgenoot Carlos Sainz bewees dit jaar dat hij zich niet voor niets smooth operator noemt. Zijn laatste schadebriefje stamt uit China, in totaal declareerde Sainz ‘slechts’ 380.000 euro aan schade.
